Snapshot

Location

Located between Biscayne Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, South Beach is directly east of central Miami.

Climate

Winter: 60-78 degrees F.
Spring and Fall: 68-86 degrees F. Summer: 77-91 degrees F.

Language

Although Miami is located within the United States, this city has an international vibe. English is spoken widely but don't be surprised if you encounter Spanish only speaking individuals.

Travel

Flight

Miami international airport (MIA) is an international hub, with flights to major cities all over the world. Fort Lauderdale airport (FLL) is also a high density domestic hub, and is only a twenty five minute drive to South Beach.

Ground Transportation

Taxi, Uber, or Lyft can easily be found throughout the city. Public bus transportation is also available. One fun option for exploring the city is by bike. Ride share bicycle hubs can be found all over the city and with the Citi bike app.

Slumber

The Gates Hotel (a Double Tree by Hilton property) is located a block off the ocean and close to many restaurants and bars. It was recently updated so the rooms are spacious and modern. If you are a Hilton Honors member, use your points here! The pool was average but you have access to two lounge chairs on the beach for free.  Great place to stay without spending a fortune!

Eats

Like any metropolis, Miami is a melting pot of culture and food. We ate at several great restaurants we found through trip advisor. Many require a reservation, so keep this in mind when planing your night out. Of note, the restaurants along ocean drive that are offering affordable menus are a scam. The food is mediocre and the drinks are outrageously inflated.

Orange blossom – Great food, casual and cool atmosphere. We went for brunch and loved it. Try the avocado toast with smoked salmon and poached eggs, its delicious!

CVI.CHE 105 – Located off Lincoln Road. Outstanding Peruvian establishment with flavorful cold or hot ceviche dishes.

Blue Ribbon Sushi Bar and Grill – Fresh sushi and great appetizers. We stopped in without reservations but were able to grab a spot at the bar.

Puerto Sagua – Best Cuban restaurant we have ever been to (and we went to Cuba!) Diner atmosphere, quick service, and excellent prices. We recommend the Cuban sandwich, braised short ribs, and flan!

Drinks

Sweet Liberty was our favorite bar by a landslide! The outside appearance is that of an antique storefront, but step inside and you’ll find a hip bar with mind blowing drinks. We recommend sipping on the “Basic Bitch”, Manhattan, or Pina Colada. Don’t be surprised if you find the bars in Miami to be empty before 11 pm. Night life in Miami is late with many bars staying open until 4 am.

Sights

Collins Ave & Ocean Drive

Two of the most famous streets in America, these roads showcase the glamor and Art Deco that Miami is world famous for. Do you like cars? Plan to feast your eyes on Bentley, Rolls Royce, and Maibach cruising in numbers.

The Carlyle hotel is located in the Art Deco district off ocean drive. It was one of the film locations for “The Birdcage”.

The Palace – A gay bar and restaurant located on Ocean Drive, stop in for the nightly drag queen shows.

The Clevelander – A massive outdoor bar made famous by daily ESPN broadcasts.

Lincoln Road – This pedestrian only promenade offers an incredible selection of restaurants, Art galleries, and shopping.

Beach Boardwalk – Enjoy a walk or jog along this 4 mile, ocean front, boardwalk. Take in the grandiose hotels and be entertained by the superb people watching.

Miami Beach

You can’t visit Miami without a trip to the beach. Pack a picnic lunch and enjoy the clear blue skies and turquoise waters.

Mango's

If you’re looking for spicy latin entertainment, pop in for a late evening cocktail. This place is a Miami Beach staple!

Duck Boat

In Miami for a short time but want to see the highlights? Hop onboard a duck boat tour to get the best of sights from both land and sea.

Wander Worthy

Miami is a solid location for a weekend hiatus from the cold, or seeking something international, without leaving the country.  You can get to Miami on a budget and stay without breaking the bank (Fort Lauderdale offers sub $90 flights from anywhere on the east coast.) The cuisine is unlimited, the weather beautiful, and sights are incredible.  Look around while having lunch in a local cafe, and you may just realize your favorite athlete or movie star is only a table away.
